Advocacy Service
Age Concern North East Wales offers a specialist advocacy service for vulnerable older people, who live in nursing and residential homes. We also support people who are in hospital and feel they have no-one to speak up for them or who are over 50 and are the victim of domestic abuse. This service is made possible by a grant from Comic Relief.
Advocacy can help you. It is a way of helping you have your say when decisions that affect you are being taken by the ‘powers that be’. Our advocate can help you to secure your rights, can represent your interests and help you to obtain the services you need.
Our advocate works in partnership with the older people who come to the service for support. Our only concern is that those people should retain as much control over their own lives as any other adult. The service is impartial and free of charge. We take referrals from any source and try to help as many older people as possible.

Volunteer Advocates
The service also needs volunteer advocates to help it succeed. These volunteers are vital to getting information and advice out to the many older people across Flintshire and Wrexham, who live in nursing and residential homes, many of whom have no family or friends in their lives any more to make sure that their best interests are protected.
Having a volunteer to visit can make a real difference for these older people, as they know that there is always someone there to whom they can turn if the need arises. Equally, if someone is in hospital, the support that a volunteer advocate can give is really valuable. This is especially so when decisions are being made about where someone will live once they are discharged from hospital.
If you would like to know more about the service, to volunteer to support it, or to refer someone to it, please contact us online or call us on 08450 549969.
